We are offering two types of licenses. The first includes a complete design of the etching machine system and a technical description of our proprietary process including procedures ($72,000) and has a delivery time of 60 days. The second is a turnkey system where we provide the machinery in addition to first license features and full training on the system including a 6-month technical support after delivery. This license has a delivery time between 2 to 4 months and goes for ($145,000). Please note that we estimated that a probe card producer may get a one-year payback on investment if it has a needle demand level of above 500 k.

The problem this product solves: Probing devices, known in the industry as probe cards, have been used for many years as the standard interface that provides electrical contact between the IC (integrated circuit) wafer and its electronic tester. Chips have become increasingly crowded with every generation. This, in turn, has imposed a greater need for needles that are precise in shape. Needles that are too thick near their tip touch adjacent needles, and cause false readings.

In addition, needles that are inconsistent in dimensions do not yield consistent contact pressures. This inconsistency results in erroneous test results due to high electrical resistance, or in excessive wear due to contact pressures that are determined by the weakest needles.

The market: Millions of needles are needed annually to support the testing of computer chips in their wafer state by internationally known producers such as Intel and Motorola. Presently, there are few major suppliers of probe needles. The problem we anticipate is not getting sales; it is equipping to accommodate the sales that will come to without aggressive marketing, based on price and quality.

Why do we claim that our product is high tech? Since the inception of needle production the industry has produced needles that do not have a conical taper. Rather than a long, narrow cone shape, needles have always had the shape of a narrow, inverted gothic arch, in other words, fatter near the tip than a theoretically perfect cone of the same length or an unsymmetrical conical shape that they call linear (2-D instead of 3-D!).

This “gothic” shape is due to the characteristics of the power supply used in the etching process. All power supplies have internal impedance. When the needle is plunged into the etching solution, and draws current from the power supply, the voltage and current begin to drop. The deeper the plunge, the more current is drawn, and the more the internal impedance of the power supply reduces the voltage and current.

Further, needle manufacturing has always been an art due to short-term changes inherent in the process. Our proprietary design (machine system and process) has resolved this problematic situation and has enabled the production of various needle taper shape (parabolic, conic, or any other curve shape for sharply-pointed or round-tip ended for any geometrically-feasible taper length).
